Requirement for my dream home #1: Light airy spaces. Preferably with elements to keep those spaces feeling even more open, like these fantastic screens...

As you can tell just by looking at my banner, I love simple repeated designs like the screens used in this home by Philip Galanes. Much more visually interesting than a wall!

While many cultures use this concept in their own traditional styles, the funny thing is that I'm drawn to them because it's such a Southern California thing (like the entrance to the Parker in Palm Springs!). The designs remind me of the cinder block fences and entrances around the neighborhood in Venice Beach where I grew up.

So, maybe it's an element of nostalgia that makes me really love this look? What do you think? Is it too retro for you, or just as cool as ever?

I also love this unexpected grouping of a deep teal blue with an old-fashioned rose colored pink and a dash of modern olive green (more like a chartreuse if you ask me!) And, of course, a neutral cream to balance them all.

And, we cannot forget the red and purple hues that will continue to be strong this year. My favorite is actually to pair them together, like this room above. Such royal richness!!

This room is for the love of all things light and airy...

There is a ridiculous amount of lucite in this retro-inspired space from Vogue Living, and I secretly think I love it (even the piano legs are lucite! insane!). The way this material works to allow us to 'see through' a room always amazes me - such a good tactic for small spaces, but in a large space like this you can still see the impact. And what are your thoughts on the change between the tiles? It achieves a similar impact as a rug would but keeps the space cool. Interesting? Or weird?

Lovely Sofa for small spaces!

The Original couch sofa combination is a piece of furniture designed to optimize any small space. I find the design of the Original to be quite striking. Flexibility is a critical element when shopping for a piece of furniture which may be the cornerstone for a loft, flat, or small apartment. I love the flexibility in this couch sofa combination. The genius around Original is centered in the four round pieces that make up the seating area. Moving one of the pieces to the front creates a small couch perfect for two people with the ever important ottoman in front to stretch the legs out onto. Keeping all four pieces of the couch sofa in one line create a larger sofa that can accommodate comfortable seating for up to 3 people and if need be 4 people.

Another neat feature is that by turning the pieces you can change where the backrests are. Like in one of the pictures you can see where the backrests are in opposite directions. Though I am not sure how often I would use the feature, I am thankful that I have the opportunity for the multifunction capability. I find the Original couch sofa to be quite attractive. I am a fan of the black-white contrast and feel that adds flair to many room settings. Original features leather upholstery, wooden frame construction, and metal tubular legs. French designer Stephanie Perruchon has created some new concept furniture that can work in many settings where space saving is crucial to overall design. As I looked at the pieces I saw possibilities for lofts, small apartments, kids rooms, office lobbies, and likely many others. It's great to see a fresh design that is multifunctional where the furniture can serve more than a singular purpose. Herzog & de Meuron

The newest Herzog & de Meuron building in Spain is the Espacio de las Artes at Santa Cruz, Tenerife. The building is a long volume intersected by a ramp that generates a triangular plaza. Along the facade, over 1,200 openings in 720 different shapes filter the natural light to the inside, while generating an amazing view during night.
With over 20,622 sqm, the building includes a public library, a contemporary art museum, photography centre, store, cafe/restaurant and several public use spaces for the community.

(With dishes like Tandoori Quail with Cucumber Yogurt and Herb Salad and Braised Victorian Lamb with Celeriac, Pomegrante, Baby Chard and Olive Tapenade - how could it not?)

Earlier this month, I made the trip to South, which is across from the Caltrain station - making it easy to access for those who are staying outside or don’t live in the city. In the evening, the twinkling lights from the station stream through the front windows of the restaurant make it seem a little bit more magical. As you walk into the eatery, you’ll get the feeling like you’ll have an low-key, but wonderful dining experience. The modern space is encased with warm woods - from the floors to benches - with pops of white and eclectic patterns from the chairs, the bar, the lighting fixtures and the walls. Sharpen up an all-white scheme by adding subtle accents of black and yellow. Choose cushions and accessories to add a small punch of colour, and then add heavy curtains and some large pieces of furniture to prevent the room feeling too insipid
Stripes don't have to be colourful to make an impact. Here, wide stripes in grey, black and white work with the dark-painted woodwork to create a sophisticated feel. Bright colours look great set against black and white, and this lime-green leather seat makes a real statement.

Patterned purple wallpaper teamed with an antique-style mirror creates a focal point out of the fireplace in this dramatic living room. The purple of the walls is mirrored in a rich aubergine rug and ottoman. An opulent combination of rich fig shades and glistening silver accessories creates a grown-up living space.
Here, instant impact is achieved by painting a traditional-style mirror in a modern, bold colour. This colourful scheme works by mixing strong pieces that have very little detail, toning down the scheme to prevent it looking too busy.

Painted floorboards are surprisingly tough and won't show up dirt as much as you might think - in a rustic-themed room, the odd imperfection will in fact enhance the look. Here, neutral sofa and armchair provide comfort without detracting from the statement dresser - distressed paintwork is an easy effect to achieve by rubbing sandpaper lightly over a painted surface, but practice on a piece of wood first to make sure you have the technique perfected.
A neutral colour palette of dusky pinks and greys creates an informal yet sophisticated look in this living room. A modular sofa is perfect for family to sit together, and upholstery in a darker colour like grey is ideal for hiding stains. Multifunctional furniture is key. For instance, the footstools can also be used as chairs or as storage boxes for magazines.

This living room uses gold and metallic accents to create a glamorous look. Soften the look by using the full spectrum, from yellow gold to mink, blending patterns and finishes. A black floor lamp makes for an eye-catching focal point, and adds an interesting mix of old and new when teamed with the traditional stone fireplace.

InStyle did a great feature on Gossip Girl's Bass/Van der Woodsen New York apartment set. If you're a fan of the show and the set decor, check out some photos we pulled after the jump as well as links to all the exclusive information over at InStyle...

Living Room done up in red, white, and turquoise. It's a mix of sharp modern lines (the white sofas, the coffee table), touches of Asian influence (red pillows), and even a glimpse of traditional flair (like the armchairs). And let's not forget the glamour: a pop art portrait and a shrine to the all-mighty Prada.

The Home Office, complete with an x-base desk featuring drawers that open on both sides, a classic Eames lounge chair covered in what looks like a Missoni chevron fabric (drool), and sweeping views of...a fake New York skyline. (Fun fact we learned on the Warner Bros. Lot Tour awhile ago: Studios print city scapes on rolls of fabric that when backlit really do give the illusion of city lights).

This is room in the whole place: the dining room has just the right amount of textures and colors. Despite the size of the art on the wall, it's matched close enough to the wall color that it's not obtrusive yet still holds interest. We love the black chandelier, the Cherner chairs, and the marble-topped Danish table. As for the red shag rug, sure it's not practical in a real life setting...but, uh, doesn't it look nice?

And finally: Serena's bedroom. According to the show's stylist, Serena's sense of style was based loosely around Kate Moss' anything goes attitude. Like her wardrobe, Serena's bedroom is mish mash of glamour clichés (metallic pillows! Gold satin sheets!), designer statements (the Bourgie lamp on her nightstand), vintage finds (that nightstand looks like something we'd seen on Craigslist), and the unexpected (gold polka dot panels / headboard).

Designed by Vicente Wolf for a Manhattan family, a wall-spanning mirror creates the illusion of endless space in this pared-down dining area; the wood-and-steel table is by Wolf, and the vintage armchairs and side chairs are by Dominique and Ruhlmann, respectively.

I am so completely in awe of this design project...

As a part of Vienna Design Week's "Paths of Passion," ten designers or design teams created site-specific installations in Viennese shops.

Designer Maxim Velcovsky took gorgeously detailed and meticulously crafted chandelier pieces...

And created cityscapes placed into a large lightbox resembling a bookcase...

And made this:

I just adore this architecture..true it's modern..but a modern type of house that I adore! This is Balaam House designed by architects Arkhefield, located in Hamilton, Australia. The house combines elements of zinc, aluminum, concrete, rich timbers, and raw battening. A main center piece of the house is the cantilevered pool, that acts as a showpiece above the main entrance. Wow! Not just another piece of modern architecture..but one that's sustainable as well. With rain water harvesting, solar hot water, a passive cross ventilation, solar controlled glass, operable louvers, shutters and blinds on solar clocks (limiting the use of the A/C), thermal mass, and low maintenance, with recycled materials too. I just love the fact that its sustainable and beautiful modern architecture.

An open house is very important so that you don't feel crapped in a space. It is a four-bedroom resident with bathrooms, gym, an outdoor living room, indoor living room, outdoor pavilion, kitchen, dining, garage, large family room, garden with large terrace and fire pit. A beautiful house that's open, spacious, and with breath-taking views!

“Our client wanted a unique piece of architecture that could enhance family life and not be precious. Feedback from the client is that the house has achieved this aspiration while providing privacy and sanctuary from the otherwise urban and public environment.”

Toile de Jouy aka Toile

Toile de Jouy is a term that has survived time, history and fashion and has come to have a far broader meaning that it did in its origin. Once, the term was applied only to those fabrics that were created in the Jouy-en-Josas factory in France. These fabrics were intricately designed with mythological figures, flowers and fruits and birds, etc. (usually one color on a solid light background). Other images crept into the factories over time, and these included pastoral country scenes done in red, blue, purple or black monochrome and were labeled "toile de Jouy." It came to mean a style of print and not just the factory town where it was originated..

"Toile, popular since the mid-1700s, can go from refined to avant-garde in the blink of an eye. Walls upholstered in this historic printed cotton foster an irresistible intimacy."

This room is by Healing Barsanti (via Zia Priven's website) It's fresh, it's chic, it's perfectly capturing that mixed use of patterns. They used the curtains to frame the doorway. The fresh green plants add a needed pop of an additional natural color, and the glowing chandelier reflects of the fabulous silver ceiling.

this room by Marjorie Skouras. Traditional shapes with very non-traditional color give this room power and interest. In fact, her use of color is extraordinary in many of her rooms...

Notice that they left out the backing in those chairs. The lattice floor tile, the pink walls,and turquoise chandelier are all absolutely wonderful.

Made of gorgeous turquoise beads draped in a classic southern style, for the right house it could be worth every $6,900 penny.

I have an obsession with Juliska. . Each piece is mouth blown, and incredibly delicate and unique (and supposedly dishwasher-safe, but I don't believe that for a second). So unique in fact, that I was afraid I'd received the wrong glasses as wedding gifts because of their varying heights. Whatever, I love it. The company is only six years old, and has quite a sense of humor.
It's defined by delicate details that almost look like water glistening on the outside of the glass. They have all sorts of products, from vases and votive holders to tumblers. Each one holds it's own beauty and could be left out as decoration no matter what it's intended purpose.
Many local boutique stores carry Juliska products, including other tableware goods. You can also purchase Juliska online at Sallie Home.

I have discovered an amazing talent artist who has a furniture line..and another accesory line for target! One of my finding is his moroccan pouf which is absolutely amazing they come in a variety of colors even in metallic silver and gold! Here are the lovely moroccan pouf used in interiors.

Philip Treacy designed and created this hotel with Irish architecture and design group Douglas Wallace.
The results are absolutely amazing.

G Hotel's penthouse suite which is named for Linda Evangelista - the 80's supermodel who was the first to wear a Treacy hat on the catwalk.

I love how the different colors layered on top of each other.
Interesting contrast.

I love the rich vibrant colors of the deep blue an purple.
